The Physics of a Parachute The parachute is an effective tool for enhanced safety, although it is widely utilized by adrenaline seekers for enjoyment. Gravity is perhaps the most crucial force acting upon the parachute, because without which a parachute would not be needed. Gravity is applied to a mass indiscriminate of its size or shape. is the speed at which a mass will accelerate due to gravity through the air, with no opposing forces acting upon it. Air Resistance is the whole reason why a parachute works. The air is undisturbed until a mass passes through it, when that mass passes through air it is effectively the same as air flowing past a mass. When air cannot travel smoothly past a body it is called drag, when drag is applied to a mass, it slows the object and or the flow of air. When a parachute is opened, air is trapped under the fabric and is forced in a swirl in uneven patterns, when air swirls it increases drag and decreases the speed of a body. When air swirls it also reduces its efficiency, a parachute when passing through the air compromises this and depending on how large the physical size of the parachute it will slow the acceleration of the mass considerably. According to Dictionary.com, terminal velocity is the constant speed that a freely falling object eventually reaches when the resistance of the medium through which it is falling prevents further acceleration.This means that the terminal velocity of a falling mass occurs in free fall when a zero acceleration is felt, this meant that the mass doesnt accelerate anymore because the forces, air resistance and gravity, air resistance will eventually balance the masses weight and therefore will fall at a constant rate, this is terminal velocity. An Alternate Perspective on the Mythical West The topic of the American West has intrigued me throughout my life. The tales of cowboys and Indians, of the rugged individual and nature, has always sparked my interest. A land with such quixotic stories of adventure, the West has instilled itself in American history. The yarns and movies of the mythical frontier provide a perception to which I among many others have chosen to adopt at one time or another. This perception has been embedded in many youths, providing a nationalistic view of America using the West as a symbol of the individualism to which our forefathers fought for. Yet it is human nature to be inquisitive, and so I delved into this topic in the hopes of developing a better understanding of the history of the great American frontier. The myth of the American West has been intertwined throughout United States history. It is often perceived as a romantic story, a legacy that has ingrained itself in American culture and society. The 1890 census announced the end of the frontier, closing a chapter in American history. In 1893, Frederick Jackson Turner argued the importance of the frontier in shaping American politics, economy, and culture. Turner’s nationalistic view of the West created a problem, providing a mythical notion of a realistically rough arena filled with conflict and frustration. Furthermore, the thesis proposed by Turner proved to be futile for the present and future. The firmness of Turner’s thesis left it susceptible to challenges, creating a revolution of historical study of the Old West in the mid-twentieth century. Historians dedicated to the American West have branched off from Turner and have created a field that hinges on this complex area. These historians have challenged the old myths of a quaint West, seeking to expose the true nature of Western expansion. Among these historians, Patricia Nelson Limerick has developed a perception of the West based on the stories of the men and women who actually lived there. In her book, The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West, Limerick maintains that Westward expansion was not a romantic saga of cowboys and Indians, but instead was a gradual conquest based on economics and politics. In a sense, the West was not founded by rugged individualists, but rather by competition and profit.

Friendship between two people of different genders may sound commonplace, in fact there are people who are great colleagues who share something in common, but †¦ you can call it friendship? Although we are used to socially friendships only exist between same sex and that the friendship between a woman and a man is hiding something more, in fact friendship is a relationship that builds over time and is based to share tastes, experiences, and other affinities that go beyond the sex of the person.Friends should be chosen based on the similarities and not based on sex. But it should be noted that a friendship between a man and a woman can lead to form a couple, if both are willing to risk that may imply, because if the relationship does not work can never back to maintain a friendship as they had previously. Moreover, many people think there may be only friendship between man and woman if you first had a different relationship between them.That is, we cannot get along as a couple bu t we have enough in common to be friends. It goes without saying that this type of situation is not comfortable with the current partner who is one of those friends who were couples so surely that must eventually do away losing the bond of friendship that united them. It could happen if one of them is willing to sacrifice his new love .When it comes to friendship between men and women line that separates this love relationship seems to be fine and easy to pass, even to cause confusion in any of the two when it begins to assess what would happen if were a little further. But also the friendship between man and the woman also has positive aspects It can make us see things from a different perspective. It teaches us to have a different view of relations between man and woman, and therefore a broader vision.It helps us be more tolerant of the other sex. There is no rivalry or jealousy because these feelings are peer. Men tend to be more competitive with them and women tend to be more je alous. Also you can achieve a better understanding of the opposite sex, contributing to greater understanding and appreciation of the opposite sex.. Though a Greek historian, Herodotus’ views on the Persians can be considered objective despite the bad blood that existed throughout the many years of Greek and Persian battles. Herodotus however carefully analyzes the Persians through documents and oral accounts, and to a great extent gives accounts on them that reflect modern anthropological characteristics. In his book The Histories, Herodotus writes mostly of the wars the Greeks had with the Persians, and in many cases, he looks into the perspective of the Persians’ view of the Greeks. Herodotus states that he does not want to pass judgment on who is to blame and only wants to state the facts from his knowledge of why the Greeks might have been treated unjustly and for the occurrences of the many wars (Herodotus 1.4). As most people know from Homer’s Iliad, the Trojan War occurred when Paris a Persian prince kidnapped Helen, and the Greeks went to Troy to claim her. What Herodotus tells us that the Persians claimed happened is that it was the Greeks who started the unjust acts of kidnapping by taking Medea, the king of Persia’s daughter. To the Persians, kidnapping was not an indirect act of war since they believed â€Å"that no young woman allows herself to be kidnapped if she does not wish to be† (1.4). Therefore the Persians believed that Helen wanted to be with Paris and that the attack on Troy was the first act of aggression that led to the Greeks being the enemies of the Persians. They argue that Huckabee merely wanted to change the terminology so that insurance companies would pay. According to a NY Times story dated March 21, 1997, however, Huckabee refused to sign the bill because doing so would violate his conscience: Mr. Huckabee said that signing the legislation would be violating my own conscience inasmuch as it described a destructive and deadly force as being an act of God. Mr. Huckabeesuggested that the phrase acts of God be changed to natural disasters. All language is metaphor. The word is not the thing. The map is not the territory.
